I just recently bought a 99 F150 s/c with a 4.2/5spd. The more and more I looked at this truck the more it looked like the front end had been lowered. I got down and looked one day and low and behold the coil springs had been cut. I want to get the stock look back and was wondering if anyone had changed out coil springs on a similar truck and any words of wisdom before I dive in! Thanks Daniel
It's been a while since I've had the front end of a 4x2 apart but I seem to recall that the springs are quite long and you will probably need a coil spring compressor for them.
You'll need jack stands under the frame to support the truck and a good floor jack for under the lower control arm to raise and lower it when you're removing and installing the spring.
The main thing to remember when working with coil springs is that they are dangerous when loaded.
I would remove the lower ball joint nut and seperate it there then lift the upper control arm and knuckle (spindle) up and hold it out of the way either with a piece of wood under the control arm or a piece of rope to hold it out of the way.
Have you got the sway bar end link removed from the control arm? Shock removed?
I haven't started on it just yet. This is my daily driver and I want to make sure I can knock it out in a weekend before I start tearing into it. I just wanted to see if anyone had done it and if they had any problems with it. I am trying to get the whole process planned out before I go in. Thanks.
Replaced the springs on my truck in about a hour. I disconected the upper ball joint and used my floor jack to lower the control arm. As Racerguy said remove the shock and sway bar link and the control arm will swing away low enough to remove the spring easily. You'll also need to unbolt the brakeline bracket from the control arm (allows spindle and brake extra movement).
