I've got an 86 f-150 4x4 w/ 5.0 EFI
Door Sticker says:
Trans: A (The transmission is a 4-spd w/ Granny Low)
Axle: 16
Transfer Case: NP208F (Tag on the Case)
Truck was manuf. in April of 1986
Where do I find a resource to decode this and the tag on the rear diff.

As for your tranny it should probally be an t18 or t19.
One easy way to tell if you rear end is a 9" or not is when you look at it from the rear of the truck, if there are no bolts on the rear cover then you have a 9" otherwise it would be the 8.8" with a removeable rear cover.
If you still have the tag for the rear axle, the bottom row of numbers will give you the ratio and axle type, i.e., "3,50 9 ..." is a Ford 9" with 3.50 gears, open. WHile Ford started using the 8.8" rear axle in 1983, the 9" was used up tp 1986. So, consider yourself lucky!!! As for ID on the tranny, there should be a tag on top of it, and the shift patterns are different too, I believe.
