4X4 Problem
I have a 98 Ranger with a 3.0 eng. Today both 4x4 lights started flashing and it will not go into 4 wheel drive. The lights will flash 3-4 times then go out. Then a few min. later the start again. Please let me know if you have any ideas on what can cause this.

4X4 Problem
I am not sure about the lights blinking, I have never herd of that before. It may be a sign of a more serious problem, however, in most cases the 4wd not working can be attributed to a dirty motor. See this topic for more info:

4X4 Problem
with a recent purchase. Lights flashed and 4WD wouldnt move. Previous owner had even just installed a new electric shift assembly. Found the transfer case had only a pint of real nasty looking stuff instead of 1.5 quarts. Rear seal was bad though there were no obvious signs of a leak till new fluid was added. I've heard that the sensor can get coated with metal and not work. This may have happened without enough fluid to "wash off" the sensor. After new fluid and disconnecting the battery to reset the computer, no problems for the last 17K. I have also solved the problem by cleaning the switch plate contacts on the drive with another vehicle.

With the symtoms you describe, I'd say there is a very good liklihood one of your hubs is bad. Expect ford to gouge you for over $300 for a new hub. I suggest switching to an aftermarket hub such as a Warn , they are superior in quality to their motorcraft counterpart (much cheaper too).
