....I did a google search for build your own welder. I found a couple of sites but also found: Build your own roller coaster, solar water heater, off road buggy, aircraft, duck factory, custom gun vise, rock tumbler, hyperbaric chamber, anvil, water proof camera housing, spudgun, garden shed, driveshaft, Backyard Observatory, WIND TURBINE, motorcycle, Texas Grill, Barcoding Laser, submarine.
How do I do a search that will only return what I am looking for?
Build my OWN hyperbaric chamber?! You never know when you'll need one of those! ('course, then you wouldn't have time to build it) I sometimes try 'DIY welder', or 'welder plans' in my searches. I have plans for lotsa wierd stuff; from electric cars to a 16th century harpsichord. How do I ever get off my duff and build sumpin'?
If you want to, I know how to turn an alternator into a welder, and if you want to, you could hook it up to a briggs and stratton or something to put it on a cart and make it portable, if your truck isn't portable enough.
I did this with my 79 CJ5 and it will burn through 1/4" stuff.

ok now i am interested wanted to tell us how to build one
Well, the just of it is to take a delco remy alternator and pull out the diodes, condensor, and remove some insulation. Then wire up a switch to the #1 terminal, and apply power to that when you want to turn it on. Then put a ground cable on the alternator case, and put a + cable on the alternator output. And if you want to, put quick disconnects on the cables, so you can reverse the polarity.
And to adjust the amps, just take a bicycle shifter and hook it up to the throttle, then bump up the RPMs till you get good power for what you're welding.
I'll get some more info and pics of what you need to remove in the alternator to make one. I picked up a 135A alternator from 4alterstart.com for 70 dollars I think.
