autozone told me that there we 2 different types of ujoints for my front driveshaft. they said i needed to find the serial numbers on the shaft. where are they and what is the differance between the 2.
Just bring your shaft in, they should be able to measure them and match them up. After that it's a vise, two sockets, and some elbow grease away to change them out. Make sure you either get factory Ford sealed units or greasable...don't settle for the in-between sealed units.
never stipulate the importance of ujoint install and removal. thanks for saying VISE instead of BIG F__KING HAMMER! i have seen more bent to heck yoke than anyone man needs to see in his life. all from people beating on it with a hammer. also take it slow... it is easy to drop a roller in the bottom of a cup, and mess the ujoint up, so take your time. this isnt the pits at NASCAR. also good ujoints sealed or greasable will have hardened cross's as well as tiny rollers, and lots of them. the cheper unit have a very poorly hardened cross and a few small needle rollers. ther is a BIG difference between the two. if you look at a bad spicer or factory ford u joint you will see it wears the needle rollers, not the cross, this is normal. on the cheaper units, the rollers fry real quick, and tear the cross up like a peice of aluminum. it is better to spend twicw as much, and buy a good ujoint, then to spend half as much, and do it twice. yokes are really only good for 2 or maybe 3 ujoints before they become to distorted to hold a cap correctly..
Get a greaseable one, I've found they last longer cause if they get dirt or anything in them you can just grease them to get that dirt out, cause its like sandpaper in there. I know this because i do the mud boggs in my area and i use greasable one and i have yet to destroy one and i'm running 35x16x16.5 boggers.
only if you keep them lubed. it does no good to have a lubable joint that has no grease. or a cheap joint that isn't hardened and breaks. stay away from the oversea's parts, your just looking for a breakdown waiting to happen..
