Pulley swap

Hi All,

I have a '99 Ranger, 3.0 liter V6, A/C, and am about to swap my idler pulley. I've noticed extreme squealing (shrieking?) during startup, getting quieter but never going away. When checking out my serpentine belt, I noticed the idler pulley is very wobbly.

It's one of the topmost pulleys, I have both the Chilton and Haynes manuals, and the job looks pretty straightforward, but I've never done this before. Do I need any tools other than sockets? Does anyone have any advice, pointers, or warnings?

I've done a forum search on pulleys, and read a recent thread that makes me confident that a new idler pulley and belt will fix the noise. I'd really appreciate tips from experienced mechanics to make this a painless job.

Ed

Welcome to FTE!!

Looks easy, remove the belt and remove the bolt for the pulley.

And get the plain white GoJo for cleaning up your hands afterwards. It won't burn on your knuckes scraped bloody from the fan shroud.
