i put a jvc 180w cd player in 74 camper special, pulled out old 8 track and did a little cutting and wiered up the new stereo battery to battery and ground to ground, stereo comes on for 1 second and turns off does any one know what to do?
Make sure that the stereo is getting the on/off power from the ignition, some units will light up for a second when you connect it to the battery. If you need to test the remote turn on, then hook the ignition wire from the stereo to the battery and it should turn on.
I'm with danger_ranger_dude, most stereos have two power inputs, one for the clock/display that gets power even without the ignition on, the other should be tied to the ignition so the unit goes off when the car is off. If either of these isn't wired correctly, the stereo may shut itself off as a built in protection.
Another possibility is that the unit has an internal thermal protection. Running straight from the battery is going to allow unlimited current, which on a cheaper unit, could fry the stereo and quite possibly your auto if the wires you use are cheap too. Did you put a fuse in line? That will at least limit the current, and if it keeps blowing when you turn the unit on, it's telling you you've got problems.
Most after markets will have a wiring harness available for particular auto models. That's the best way to go if it's an option because the power to the factory radio will be clean and probably have a fuse in the autos fuse box.
