I bought one of those neon shift ***** for my truck but am having a HARD time getting the original off- it is a 2002 Ford Ranger that I just purchased. Does the **** even come off or am I out of luck? Please somebody help me out because any suggestions would be much appreciated because I REALLY want this to work..thanks

Shift ****

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jul-02 AT 07:18 PM (EST)]I've seen several posts on other sites about people having trouble with their shifter **** coming off in their Ranger. Apparently the factory **** is somehow glued on, and is difficult to get off, at least when you want it to. A lot of the ***** have came off after sitting in the hot sun for hours, from what I've read elsewhere. I've heard a few guys who knocked the crap out of their face when pulling at the **** with great force, and it finally coming loose. You may have to cut it in two with a hack saw to get it off, I'm not sure. Try going to RPS and do a key word search on shift ***** and see what happens. If you can't find anything, get back in touch with me, and I'll try to help you research this project. I may have to change mine sometime also, and I would like to know what you come up with. PEACE. Darby

*edit* I went and did a search and typed in shifter *****, and found several posts about this topic. It seems that the **** is just crammed down on the shifter, and held in place with "splines" inside the **** itself. I just wonder if a person could take a small thin flathead, and somehow push upward in between the **** and shifter, to disengage the tension on the splines. If you're not planning to save the old ****, you could cut straight down with a hacksaw or something similiar until you contacted the metal of thr shifter. Then, take a flathead screwdriver and carefully break it off. I hope this will help you to finish your project in good order. try the search that I mentioned, to see all of your option for your specific application (year/model etc.). Take care Darby

Of course I appreciate all that you mentioned but of course being a *girl* it all went way over my head....LOL I think at this bet my best option might be to go to the dealer since I just purchased the truck about 2 weeks ago and see what they say because I did have a few friends try with no luck at getting the **** off and I would like to keep the original so the cutting it off option is not available to me.

Angel,

This site gives advice similar to Darby's in a "step by step" fashion. Lots of other good info, too. Good luck.

I have a 94 Ranger with a manual and all i did to get the shift **** was to put it in fourth and gave it one quick yank. letting it sit in the sun for a few hours might help. Mine popped right off but since being a new truck you might have a little trouble but should pop off after a little hard work. you could also try a gear puller as a suggestion. let me now how it works.

The shift **** is glued on. Use a heat gun on low temp. setting at some point the **** will come loose. If you need to drop the trans. you can remove the rubber boot ( 4 hidden screws under the bottom lip of the boot) then loosen the nut at the bottom of the shaft and replace it on the other side, Tighten the nut and the shaft will be free from the trans.

I have a 98 Ranger with a manual. I changed my shift ****. by tiwsting it a little bit, then putting it in fourth gear and giving it one good jerk and it came off.

(Just don't put you face in the way of it as it comes off because it hurts like hell when it hits you)
