Question Dented Gas Tank Safe?

My son dented his gas tank on his 1997 4dr. Explorer. It's kind of a scrape / dent, about 1.5 foot long and about 2-3 inches up into the tank. It doesn't appear to be leaking but I was wondering if this is safe. The car has around 115K and I don't want to put a lot of money into it. Any comments? Also the fuel guage is not working right. I'm not sure if the problems are related to each other. Thanks

I would think it's safe as long as it's not leaking

If the fuel gauge isn't working it might be related to the dent if it's not letting the float majigger reach down far enough to read gas or it's probably a bad sending unit.
