One time my wife came home in the dark and told me I needed to check her car out that it was running terrible. Cats had plugged up and I could see it glowing from underneath like a space ship from 60 yards away. If you run one hard enough and long enough it will start to turn red as I have seen it myself and I have not done anything mind altering in years. That includes manifolds too.

That is the exact same setup as me but I have a dual tip and my tip always turns red and sometimes like Tom said, magma comes shooting out the side. I have ran into several lawsuits with pedestrians legs being burnt from the heat of the pipe or the magma spitting out. By the way, I am just kidding, although I do have that same setup

yeah but we're not talking about red hot manifolds we're talking about exhaust tips.

Forward cats and manifolds will generate a whole lot more heat than an exhaust tip, that's for sure. Although i've never seen one turn red, I've definately seen cars catch on fire from having leaves stuck up under their forward cats.

"OK hold on do you think that I am talking about the tip or the manifold. I'm talking about the manifold and the cats not the tip"

I am pretty sure we ARE talking about the manifold and NOT the tip

This was the original post. I think he was talking about the exhaust tips.

He also says his manifold and cats are easy to see because of his 3" body lift.

I don't care if it was his header, cats, piping muffler or tip. I dont care if his brake lights glowed red when he stepped on the pedal to the left of the gas.

Lets see some pictures!!!!!

You'd think it would have to be running retarded timing and/or way lean.

I've seen that picture before!!!

Unless this guy is running a similar motor, 1000+ hp, then i need to see his pictures. I actually commented on this photo in one of my reply posts, but the server was too busy, so it never posted. But this is what came to mind when this thread started.

Yea, it’s a great picture. Assuming the headers are carbon steel you can estimate the temperature at 2,000 to 2,100 degrees from the yellow color. Definitely hot enough to roast most anything…

As to the original question -- when it’s dark out, I believe you can see a slight visible red at somewhere around 750 degrees so it’s possible that HubDeep’s friend had not imbibed in recreational hallucinogenics.

1000 hp plus thin walled stainless steel headers? You can cook Thanksgiving dinner on that

Only thing that would cause that would be an extreme blockage in the pipe. If you have all 4 cats, I believe one or more of your cats are blocked. Mine broke up and came out in pieces on the driver's side. They rattled like crazy first. You can search my threads for this info. I have had one car do that, due to blocked cats.

My mom's friend had a car burn to the ground because of a blocked cat, the floor got so hot that the carpet caught on fire. She wasn't very ,how should I put this, "bright", she thought it was normal to got so hot.
