Has anyone ever run into a C-6 that bolts up to a NP case and a 351M that has an output shaft about 3" too long to bolt up to my existing NP 203 case ???
Also does anyone know how the front plate on the C-6 inside the bell housing is supposed to come off to get at the pump???
well the way you get the pump out is remove the bolts, then remove the pan, and valve body then using a small pry bar push the main part of the gear, clutch packs forward to push the pump out. oops almost forgot after you loosen the intermediate band some.
And as far as the output shaft ford had 2 different lengths in the C6 if I remember correctly you are just gonna have to find the short one. what are you replacing for a trans, becuase if it is a C6 now you can pull the output shaft out of the one you have, and put it into any C6 from another pickup or a car, and use your current adaptor.
monsterbaby : I am swapping a C-6 with a fried pump for one which picked up
that is supposed to be rebuilt and was bolted to the fresh 351M in a '77 F150 4X4 .
I've been told now that I've discovered this difference that the whole transmission has to be taken apart to change the output shaft . The one I just took out that needs a pump already has extra forward clutches and a shift kit .
If they have to be ripped down to change the output shaft I may as well just put the pump from the long one in the one that fits .
I was under the impression the only C-6 that were a different length were for
2 X 4 vehicles .
Can the tailstock be removed on the C-6 from the rear by pulling a snap ring from thr bottom with the pan off or something or does the whole works have to come apart from the front ??
it has to be torn clear down you can't get to the snap ring without taking out the rest of the internals. but if you aren't scared of rest of your trans, and know that the only problem is the pump then by all means just change the pumps, as long as they are close to the same year trannys, ie 76 or latter
monsterbaby: I think your to just change my pump would be the way to go if they are the same .
I do not know what year the new one is but purchased the other in the truck in '78 .
I'm assuming it is the pump as it was working fine till I gassed up one day and when I got back in and fired up , nothing but park . and a sort of ticking sound at times from the bell housing area .
Never seen an auto just die like this before . I pulled my cooler lines and have no flow so I'm hoping mostly that it is just the pump .
Thanks for the reply as well as I can find no body around here that knows dick about these C-6 autos .
you could have a bad convertor too but you will know that when you pull the trans, if it is broken, or missing studs, or a broken pump drive, and for gp I would use the convertor from the new trans if it is fairly new just to be on the safe side, or buy a new one just incase metal particales got into the old one, from a pump coming apart, and also look at the pan, and filter closely to make sure of no metal fragments (there will probably be some clutch material in the bottom of the pan this is normal as long as not excessive, but pieces of metal are not normal, and would require tearing down the trans for atleast cleaning.)
