What should I pay for a 56 F100 with a big back window in original condition, it has a stock V8 & ford-O-matic trans, very straight and no rust and not restored, some grill and front damage and is all there. Can I get any feedback?
Trying to picture in my mind your description. Off hand I would say your looking at $6,000.00 to $8,000.00 on the low side. Good luck it sounds like a great find. A detective I know on an investigation a few years ago stumbled across a 56 bird in perfect unrestored condition in an elderly womans garage. He purchased it from her for $10,000.00 He felt bad and went back the next day and gave her another $5,000.00.
If your going to hot rod it, I'd look for another truck. A big-window ford-o-matic 56 is a very very desirable truck! If you even think about cutting a truck like that up, I would have to kill you. If its mostly original, $7000-$10,000 is just a start. -4speed
I think you guys are all jumping to conclusions. "Original condition" means to me that it is very worn. Many items will need to be replaced or repaired to get this truck in shape. Suspension, drivetrain, interior, bed, brakes and sheetmetal all can get very pricey. And this one has body damage to the front end!! Does it run? Does it stop? Have you inpected the floorpans to see if they are solid? Have you looked real good at the cab corners for rust? I say $3500 is about right with all these unanswered questions. You can always offer more if he says no, but it's real hard to offer less once you have over-bid. Good luck, John
John's right. "Original condition" can mean it's all the original rust.
Once you check it out thoroughly, the price is first driven by the condition of the sheet metal, drivetrain, suspension...in that order. If it's all good, you've got a winner. Just deduct for the parts of it that need fixin.
One last thought the VIN did not specify anywhere for the Big Window Option. I know countless people here in Southeast who can install an original section from another truck and one would know the difference. I would start at $3500 and proceed forward. In Virginia I happen to know where there are two original BBW trucks one in original color one in DP90. Examine, examine, and examine some more
You guys are scaring me, I hope you don't come to kill me for cutting up my big window. I found my big window in a farmers barn in central Colorado and it was all original but now it is a lot more fun to drive. You can see at www.michellesfords.com Perhaps you may spair me since my truck was not an automatic. I have to admit that it did have some beautiful rust free sheetmetal on it.
Forums are great, thanks for the reply, I will fill in the blanks now except for the location of the truck, Ha! The truck runs but has not been started for 3 years, motor will need rebuilding, trans supposely works ok ? brakes ? rust, I haven't looked carefully but seems pretty much rust free, cab is all original and has no mods or reworked sheetmetal. The truck will need some work to drive but needs a complete restoration, one bonus is it has never been hotroded or restored before and is all original. Rear glass is a little clouded but fair. I also want to restore it to an original state, I have another 56 I'm going to hotrod with a 427 side oiler. Please more input.
Ok, I was going by watching bigwin's on ebay that were complete rust free 302 powered selling for $8000 Now the matching #'s ford-o-matic in my opinion adds some value. Sounds like a decent project truck thats solid, but needs alot of work. I'd say$5000- $7000? Is the motor matching #'s? Has the wirring been touched?
Michelle, Yours was not an auto so I'll let you go, besides that '55 you did is beautiful! -4speed
For me, the big back window is over rated. I like the way they look, but I have heard that they are very hot to drive with the sun beating down on your back. I grew up in the desert and hate baking in the sun. So here in CA if you do see a BBW it is usually tinted limo black. Also, buying one of those rear replacement glasses is very pricey. So, I like 'em, but I'm not going to pay much more for a bbw than a regular back window.
The truck sounds like a perfect candidate for restoration. Is price an issue for you, or are you absolutely set on taking it home? I would start at $3500 respectfully, and then negotiate. I usually ask the seller if he can tell me how much it would cost to rebuild the engine, tranny, brakes, etc. So, happy shopping. Looking forward to pictures.
I bought my regular rear window '54 2 years ago for $4400. The body had some problems, but the drive train was already done. 289/c-4 with a Lincoln Versailles 9". I drove it home with a bed full of new parts including an AOD tranny. Good luck, John
I was thinking FE 27, just as in an auction, the worth of something can be simply stated as "the amount someone is willing to pay to possess it." So I guess you will be the authority on this subject once you have completed the deal. Please share with us what the outcome is. John
I'm hopefull in bringing it home and have been nursing a deal for awhile. They made a comment that somebody said it was worth 6,000. I've had 4 to 5 in mind. If I get it I'll share some pics. Off this subject, I'm still trying to get a hold of AV8ford who is a member here with an ad on a 51 F1. Can somebody connect us.
