On the average if both are well maintained and not rode hard ( six cyclinders, 2 wheel drive and normal highway driving, automatic) how long will they go before needing a total rebuilt or replaced? My guess 200,000 on the engine and 150,000 on the trans. i'm i way off? Thanks guys I just replaced my trans on my caravan at 100,000. So i was woundering about my truck 87 f150 4.9
That motor should run well beyond 200K, now the tranny?????? which one do you have. C6 or AOD I believe they did not offer the E4od in that year model. If it is a c6 it will also last a long time an AOD should to but not as long. You have got a bulletproof motor though.
I hear different things on this website about the 302--some saying it is a good motor, but many saying it is too light for a half ton. Any ideas what I can expect for "life before rebuild" on my 1988 302/AOD/ 4 x 2 supercab, 3.55 LS. I take good care of it--no rust yet, regular maintenance. It has 84,000 miles on it now, and I drive about 15,000 miles per year combined city/highway. I drive it fairly carefully--ie. light on the gas pedal, and don't speed, no off-road driving.
Thanks,
Frank.
Engine will last past 200k easily. Transmission as long as the fluid is kept clean and cool, will last just as long as the engine. Got a AOD with 200000 miles on it and still shifts good. All comes down to how well you take of it.
I think i read somewhere that you should change the filter every 20k or less. I don't know about changing all of the fluid, but if you drop the pan enough times to change the filter, the fluid should stay pretty fresh. Just my $0.02.
You can buy an aftermarket oil filter that goes in the pressure line to the oil cooler and uses a standard spin on oil filter. this will remove a lot of the fine contaminants. Leave the original in the pan and just drain the pan. My dad always taught me to have the fluid and filter changed every year and never had one go out. Change the engine oil every 3-5k miles, stay away from Fram Filters, replace your coolant every year and replace air filters with the oil change and I've seen the 4.9 engine go over 300k easy with proper care and feeding.
I just bought a '94 F250 with 200k+ mi. Engine (4.9) seems to be in great shape...good consistent compression. On the trans (E4OD), the jury is still out. I also have a '97 Crown Vic with @140k on it. I change the trans every 25-30k, and have the coolant flushed and replaced annually. So far, so good.
Because they're both susceptible to the torque converter clutch problem, I'm pretty gung-ho about changing the trans fluid, preferably all of it. So I drop the pan and drain the converter. Heat is apparently the big enemy of any auto trans, & higher heat causes the ATF to break down faster. It cheap compared to a reman E4OD. Once you've done it a time or two, it's pretty easy - and I think I'm a little more thorough than your typical pimply 19 year-old.
How ofter should you change the transmission fluid for a 5 speed manual trans? Would that be about 60,00 miles. Is there a oil filter in a 5 speed manual transmission?
i have an 89 with a 302/AOD. The tranny lasted till 208k and the engine is still going stong. the only complaint i have with the AOD is a pretty expensive rebuild. that and the friggin tv cable.
