full time 4wd

i looking at buying a 1979 f150 and it has full time fourwheel drive. im relatively new to these trucks but i ve never heard of a ford half ton with full time 4wd. the truck supposedly has a dana 44 up front (i dont know how to tell). what transfer case is in this and what would i have to change to make it part time, ie trans case, hubs, etc. any info you guys could give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Devin

i got a 75' highboy and it has a full time high low lock, never had one B4. i guess the full times R the NP203 and its chain driven i dont know if i like it yet or not i might just get a NP205 part time there a all gear drive much more durable! i think they make a kit for the 203 to make it part time but i heard too that it can cause problems? someone will B able to tell you more on this. oh i think u could probably put lock outs on it and just lock it in and then it wouldnt make it really b full time but i dont know if it would help much for gas mileage? well good luck!

Yes it is an NP203. These are very tough transfer cases, don't let anyone tell you they aren't. They are chain driven but that doesn't make them weak.

Installing hubs may help your fuel mileage, but I doubt it. If you do install hubs, go with warn premium or Mile Marker supreme stainless, you don't want any plastic in that hub to break.

203's are tough. it's real easy to put a part time kit in them too. then get some lock out hubs and your set. i've put part time kits in two of them and wheeled the heck out of them and never had problems. plus you get 2-LO for putting around off road when you don't need 4-wheel drive.

i got mine off the shelf at a local 4-wheel drive shop. the ones i used are made by Mile marker. all you do is remove the output housing and put in the parts that come in the kit. they come with pretty good instructions. i think i paid $80.00 a couple years ago. theres another kit that replaces the whole output shaft but thats a lot more money. but probably stronger.

the more i think about it wouldn't it just be better to swap in an np205 and put lock outs on so when im not fourwheeling i would be getting slightly better mileage from less drivetrain power loss? would all i have to do is swaap the t case and change to manual lock outs to make this feasible?

Its a lot of work to do that, they use different length drive shafts, different U Joints, and they don't mount up the same, most NP 203s have a divorced setup, that is, another small driveshaft in between the transmission and the transfer case.
Not to mention that a working NP205 will set you back $800.

the price really isn't an issue cuz i can get a 205 for cheap, but would i still be able too get the 205 to bolt up to the back of the c6 in the truck now like a married t-case?

You would need the Adapters, which are hard to find and pretty spendy.

I installed a Mile Marker conversion kit I purchased from either Jegs or Summit for about $90. Installation was straight forward and not at all difficult...it might have taken an hour or two. Also installed a set of Mile Marker hubs. Fuel economy and quality of ride is much improved.
