i know that motorcraft is an excelent filter but i would like to try a different one which one or ones are the top oil filters for f150 4.6? does the adv really matters my filter is connected to the engine strait-up so theres no way of the oil draining.
It all depends on the reasons for wanting to try dirfferent brands. I will say for the $2.97 at Wal Mart the Motorcraft is an excellent value oil filter. Has the silicone anti drainback valve, well made bypass valve on the open end of the filter as Ford recommends as well a good filtering media. If price is what makes you want to change you could try the Wal Mart house brand Super Tech filter. Only $.90 cheaper though. It is a pretty decent filter. If you just want to try and have better filtering go for either the Wix/Napa Gold filter or the Purolator Pure One which is who makes the Motorcraft filters anyway. Also you could try the Mobil 1 filter but they run around $10.00 each.
I am a believer in the Wix/Napa Gold filters.
I have yet to meet a mechanic for any firetruck or ambulance that uses anything but Wix filters.
WIX is made by Dana .....just like all kinds of other stuff on your Ford.
After realizing this, I did some looking around, and agree.....WIX for me too, thanks.

I know that Dana manufacture parts for Ford, but I thought that the Motorcraft oil filter was a Purolator.

Other than What Brons2 said. I didnt mean everything on a Ford was Dana.....just alot of things in there are made by a branch of Dana. Some drive train & electrical stuff.
I suspect that Motorcraft filters are made by whoever meets Ford's spec's on a contract bid. The key point here is "meets Ford's specs". We don't know what those specs are but I presume they meet the level needed for production use. With that in mind it is not hard to believe that Purolator, Wix, Champion Labs or other quality mfr could be the supplier.

MIDFL
It has consistently been Purolator for a number years for the OTC filters sold at parts houses and department stores. Just pick one out of the box and look at it, Purolator has a unique baseplate.
I have seen the factory installed filter be a Champion Labs filter, however.
All I ever run on my Fords is Motorcraft filters. On the Honda we run the Wal-Mart specials. Have had pretty good luck with them, I've gone to the wider filters on the CRV. The skinny ones that are avaliable are about impossible to change..
I like the Wal-Mart price on Motorcraft. and use them all the time, There are alot of good filters out there on an oil/filter forum Super Tech from Wal-Mart are used by many, they test out OK.
