Oil Change

Have my '05 PD for a month now with 1300 miles driven. Question: should I be changing oil and filter now or wait until 3000 miles driven?

K80: Welcome to FTE, you will find a lot of information for your new truck on this site! To answer your question I would wait till 3000 miles to change the oil. That is what was recommended to me, then I sent a sample of oil to get analized to make sure everything was ok in the inner motor.
If you search this site you can buy oil filters and fuel filters reasonably priced.

Hope this helps,
Cruzer

While I agree with you that changing at 3000 miles will be fine, I really think it's a waste of money doing an analysis on the first oil change. The first drain will show higher wear numbers than average and it's not real indicative of whether something is wrong or not. Furthermore, if there is a problem, there is 97,000 miles of warranty left so the problem will be under warranty for a long time so there is no emergency rush to fix. Just my opinion of course!

Good point Hammer, But I got the oil analized for free with the purchase of the oil filters. I'm also a stickler on maintenance records, and sometimes you can catch a problem early(say antifreeze in the oil within breakin period) and get it repaired before further damage. With the oil analysis, they can tell you if you can go longer on changes which will save you money in the long run. Keep in mind, there is more to it than checking wear numbers!

A different outlook,
Cruzer

I like to change the oil soon on a fresh motor, there is a lot of metel being thrown around in the motor, I would change it as soon as you could, 1000 miles sounds good, you can only help it not hurt it....

As you say: It can't hurt to change the oil at a 1000 miles (have 1400 now) and there is no indication that the factory oil is a type of "break-in oil which might sway one not to change the oil so soon. Thanks for the in-put. MC

Change it now and then again at 3000. After that go to a regular schedule. There are a lot of break-in wear metals circulated in the oil. If you change your own oil, look at the oil you drain out. You'll see what I mean. It will look like metal flake paint.

He is very right^^^^^^^ that is what I would do, do it now and at 3300 miles or so and then regular 3000 miles.

Let's face it guys the oil filter is going to catch any stray metal from casting. I like you still change out of old habit ASAP but I am sure it is a waste of time.

Proper changing of the oil is never a bad thing. If it were me, I'd have changed it at around 500 miles, then again at 3000, then at regular intervals afterward.........

Thanks for the input. I usually change oil at the 2500 mile mark on my gas cars (an oil change freak I am I know), will take your advice and change the 6.0 oil now. MC.

What oil filter did you buy, and from where did you get it from that gave you a free oil analysis ?
