[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Sep-02 AT 11:16 AM (EST)]on a 94 ranger how do you get the gear shifter off?
the haynes book says take the nut off and push down and pull out, but the bolt look like a thd. rod and does not come out .
also the quick disconect on the slave cylinder does it use the same kind of tool as the fuel lines
gear shifter is removed by removing the 17mm nut from bolt at base of shifter and then put this nut on other side of bolt and TIGHTEN. The bolt is a wedged-shape bolt. The slave cylinder to line connection comes apart with a special tool. If you don't have it, you can get it off by, first, cleaning all the dirt fron this connection, then you will see a white ring around where the connection is. take a small screwdriver and gently press this ring evnly into the slave cylinder. This will release the tangs that hold the line into place.
my brother inlaw is going to tackel a clutch change, is there anything else he needs to know that would ease this job along.
I know the drive shaft is in two parts I told him he should take it loose in the middle and drop it is this correct.
I have no experence with rangers, although I have done mustangs, and firebirds.
This is pretty much tha same as putting a clutch in anything else. I would install a new slave cylinder at this time as well as a new pilot bearing also. Only other thing I would do is that when the trans is removed, at the top rear of the trans you will see 3 black rubber plugs. Remove these by prying them out w/ a screwdriver, coat w/ a good silicone sealer, and reinstall. If they leak, and they are notorious for it, they will drain the trans of fluid very quickly and w/o oil, it's a goner. Hope this helps. Later, Rick
