Listen, my dad got me this really weak 1990 Ford F-250 naturally aspirated diesal rescently and it isn't in the best shape. I'm looking to put some mods on it, but don't know anything about diesals. What can I do to provide ALOT more power to this truck?
Deisels cannot be naturally aspirated. They need very high pressure on the fuel injector end. You will have at least 2 fuel pumps, 1 low pressure pump in each tank and a high pressure pump in the engine. These high pressure pumps are usually very expensive. It sounds like you have a mechanical as opposed to an electronic fuel injection system.
Typically the only way to add alot of power to a deisel is to add turbo's. If you do have efi, you may find a 'superchip' that will give you a little to alot of added performance depending on which engine you have. I beleive superchips.com is a site sponsor so just click on the link when you see it. these run $250 and up.
You'd probably get off cheaper selling it and buying a 460ci gas truck if your looking for raw horsepower.
A 90 non Power Stroke does not take kindly to adding a Turbo (to many miles now). They are a work horse though as I've pulled some ugly size loads with them befor. There just isn't a lot of performance work you can do with it. Like HardScrabble says Be happy with what you got, especially if dad bought it not you. Have the injectors tested to see if any are weak and take it to a dealer as very few other pepole have the timing equipment to set the injector pump.
