Question FILTERS...What do you recommend?

I just bought a used 2001 F350 psd and was wondering what filters you would recommend using? Air filter...fuel filter...oil filter...and any others I am forgeting. Should I stay with Ford or Motorcraft? Thanks for the time!

I've never had any trouble with WIX(same thing as NAPA). I think Baldwin makes good filters also.

Thanks 2wise4aGM. I have used WIX filters on our other vehicle and was thinking about using them on my f350 psd. Thanks for the info. Are their air filters good also?

Here's what I do for the air cleaner. It would be exactly the same for your truck.

I use Motorcraft air and oil filters. I bought my last two air filters from shopdiesel.com because they were on sale at the time. I have used Motorcraft fuel filters as well, but I currently have a Racor in there because of the price. I see shopdiesel.com has the Racors for $15.80, while their price for a Motorcraft is $35. My truck had a Hastings fuel filter on it when I got it, which is one of the brands that has the filter and the cannister lid made together. I had to acquire a cannister lid before I could use the Motorcraft. I think Fleetguard is also another filter brand I would trust, but I stay away from Fram.........

I use the Tymar air intake (Donaldson filter element), Racor fuel filters, and either Purolator or Motorcraft oil filters. Racor makes the Motorcraft fuel filters, so when you buy Racor you get the same exact thing. I also believe that Purolator makes the Motorcraft oil filter for our trucks. I buy which ever I can get the best price on when it comes time to change my oil. Unfortunately the days of $2.99 Purolator oil filters at Sears are gone.

Just because a company makes filters for someone else it doesn't make them the same filter. Cut some of them apart. Puralator sold out to Wally World, Sears, Advance and so on and so went the quality. If Ford filters are too pricey buy what -you- trust.

So, the Purolator that say's Motorcraft on it is different from the Purolator that says Purolator on it, and the quality is better because one cost's three dollars more than the other??? I don't get it. I've got one of each in the garage, I guess I'll have to cut them up and see for myself.

Should I cut the cannisters off and unroll them, or will I be able to tell the difference by just chopping them in half with the sawsall?

The filters appear identical to me. Maybe if cookie88 actually does the test, which I wouldn't spend the money on, we'll know for sure.

I've seen different seal designs and filter media inside filters made by the same company with different names on them. When a filter is made for ford or whomever, that dont make them their self, they give the specs they want or require. The spec for the next company might not be the same. Thats how two filters made by the same company may still be different.

Well, it's pretty easy to tell that the Racor and Motorcraft fuel filters for my truck (the older style) are the same. I guess we'll have to see about the oil filters.

I see. I bought a whole mess of the $2.99 Purolators right before Sears upped them to $7.99, so even with the $10 Motorcraft I'll only be out about $12....or 5.68 gallons of #2

Probably won't do it tomorrow since all I do on Sunday is watch football, but somebody bump this thread back up next week and I'll give them a looksee.

You're doing better on pricing than I am. I can't find a Purolator for less than $10 and the Motorcraft is just a little bit more. Of course, diesel is a bargain here at $1.99/gallon.

For me it's Motorcraft oil filter, fuel filter, trans and Magnafine inline trans. As far as air I have the Tymar set up and use the Baldwin paper filter. I may pay a little more, but you know what they say. You get what you pay for. Randy
