With all the problems with the Escape/Tribute transmission & Ford litteraly coming up with every excuse why its not their fault there must be a way to improve & add to its longevity
I'll suggest the following & tell me what you think:
1-larger cooler
2- an aftermarket hand held to improve/raise shift points. (higher shift points means more fluid surging through the inner workings at crutuial shift times).
3-synethic fluids & regular flushes
4- I;m told by an expert tranny guy to always punch out overdrive whenever your in city driving.
so far i;m advised that an aftermarket hand held unit (which one) is the best solution to add life to this little tranny.
any thoughts?
Ford has fixed the computer timing on the shifting for 2005, my 2005 Tribute stays in gear a lot more than my Friends 2004 that "Hunts" for the lower gear anytime you step on the gas.
I also drve with O/D off in town, one thing that really bugs me is that my Friends has way better pick up than mine and I have heard other 05 owners complain of this, coudl be the new computer in it, it may be slightly detuned to cure the trans/mileage complaints.
I wouldn't assume Ford has "fixed" anything by changing the shift point. The CD4E has had problems since it was first used on the Mazda 626 in 1994. Do a search and you'll find plenty of sites complaining about the tranny. I don't think any the suggestions will definitely prevent a failure since there have been 2005 Escapes with less than 10k miles have failures and there are Escapes with over 150k miles without problems. I would suggest locking out overdrive in town if your in the constant 40-50mph range where the overdrive is "hunting" but I'd do that for any car.
