Basically all of our trucks with the throttle body facing forward can be ram air right? I would think since you could probably run a cone filter right down near the grille right? I'm looking to get rid of the air box but just wondered if designing a ram air setup would work. Anyone tried this?
MPH or RPM man? I don't think those are even close to the same. So ram air is only good over 100mph? Well then why do the chevies have it? Man I just wanna make something cool. Like a shaker hood with a nice blue filter over the throttle body. I could get some of the lund hood scoops and cut a nice slot in the hood to let air in to supply the filter. That be a sweet idea. Mustang you've got ram air right?
I also think a shaker would be cool! I was working with a guy a while back on building one out of stainless pipe , but we done work together anymore. A factory motor will shut down @ 5000 rpms
I was saying 95 Miles Per Hour, the RPMs will differ with gearing ect, but that speed is what the 4 91-96 F150's I have driven cut out at. Think about what you just asked. Why do chevys have it? Because they are gullible enough to buy a truck with ram air when their truck will never see enough speed to do any good. You can do the lund hood scoop(s) and cut the hood to let the air in, it will be cooler and most likely put more air to the filter, which won't hurt anything, but the ram air won't do anything for ya.
I think everyone is forgettng that adding ram air will also give you a cold air intake and its associated performance and efficiency gain.
Also, saying that ram air won't do anything until 100mph is, imo, just wrong. I don't beleive improving airflow will ever be wrong. It might not get you 100 hp boost but it will always give you SOMETHING. I see people changing all their fluids to synthetic for the 8-10hp gain so why not spend the same or even less to get another 2-10% with ramair ???
Finally popa tim thinks the way I do. You don't have to go 100 MPH for ram air to take effect actually it would really be less effective, because with the air velocity travelling over the vehicle you would need a cowl induction hood. Ram air is good for all applications and so far GM has noticed. Ford has lacked but I guess they don't care. Cold air will be supplied to the engine, and it would work I just don't want to cut my hood and end up with crap afterwards. I would have to rig up a dual filter setup to run off of the two intakes on the throttle body.
I don't know if I'd cut up my hood without knowing where the best place to mounts scoops is, espcially when there is plenty of high pressure air right at the grill. My old Javelin used to have ram air intakes just below the front bumper :-)

I had a couple of jav's and a couple of amx's too. I loved those cars! I had to sell my last one, 74 amx w/401 cowl induction due to poor finances and haven't had the opportunity to start yet another project since getting married. I'll see what photos I can dig up. Won't be many, if any as we had a celler flood this past june and alot of stuff got ruined including our wedding album, my comic collection, my album collection... <sigh> its not been a good year

Do you think it would be possible to run an intake line from the throttle body to just over the fan shroud where the intake is? There is a small inlet there where my intake hoses are, and I want to eliminate all of the stock air box all together and just have basically ram air style intake system. It will be shorter so less restriction. Is it possible? Has anyone done it?
