I need help/advice moving

I've got an old 57 Ford pickup. I have to move to Tucson, about 2000 miles. I checked with movers, they all want around $1000 to move it. I don't think I can afford that. Should I drive it, It runs good now, but thats a long way to drive an old truck. It could be a hard drive too. Maybe I should sell the truck, but then I couldn't write to this forum. Can anyone help me?

yeah, i would say rent a car trailor and a rental p/u from some rental place, for one way. that would be way cheaper than 1000

Well, it might be easier on the the "old girl" if you took her on a trailer. But that lacks dignity. She's a work horse. She may need to go on the back roads so you can go slower. But if it were me, that's what I'd do.

Leave her with a friend and then plan a "road trip". Taking the old roads she'd have driven new and finding all those neat places we don't see anymore. Make a "mini-vacation" out of it.

My neighbor (a life-long ford man) said: "These things were meant to be driven, not to sit. The hardest thing on a Ford truck is not driving it."

So, take your nearest and dearest (and your wife/dog) for at least one last road trip. (but DO take your tools and some spare disposables - (belts etc.))

And take pictures!

And post them!

Oh, BTW: I understand the weather in AZ will be a little different - you may want to check what oil to use in her etc. But I think she'll enjoy the drier climate.

Well I've got a newish rearend in the "old girl". She was leaking rear end fluid without my knowledge, and started to whine back there. My dad, an old mechanic said that I could fix the leak, fix it and run it, but it would always be a wounded vet. (no offense ment, I'm a vet) So I went out to Creaty Bender's,an old style junk yard, and he had a deal for me. Seems he had a takeout from a newish ford truck, the guy wanted a car rearend in his truck for highway travel. I don"t know about the wisdom of that, but it was my gain. I was worried about the transfer, but Creaty said that it would bolt right on. He was right. All that to say that maybe I could drive it, but I'm gonna check U-Haul for a truck and a tow rack.

I had to make the same decision back in June. I was moving from Montana to Omaha, NE, about 1400 miles. I wasn't too concerned about my 70 F250 making the trip, but I needed to tow my car and didn't know if that would be too much. Well, I had the truck checked out by my mechanic ( it need u-joints) and headed east. It made the trip with no problems, only used a quart of oil the entire way. I stuck to around 60 - 65 mph and did use some 2-lane highways too. I did have some basic fix-it items with me, like a couple spare belts, extra anti-freeze, etc.

One thing you might want to do is actually go to a Uhaul center in person and ask about what kind of trailer might work for your truck. I tried the website and the 800 number and they all said that my truck was too big to put on their trailers. I know that isn't true since I've seen at least two being hauled on Uhaul trailers since then.

Good luck with whatever you decide!
