Im not exactly a 6 cylinder expert, so maybe you guys can help me. I just got an 81' Ford truck with a 300. The guy I got it from said it used to run good but just up and quit one day. Also said it may have a blown head gasket. Anyways I pulled it home and cant get it to fire. Im getting fire to the points and when I pour a lil gas down the carb it tries to fire, but wont. It has new wires, cap, and points. Could the timing chain have jumped? To make this more interesting, the distribitor is out of a 60's model something and the carb is off a Falcon accoridng to him, don't know if that would affect anything since he said it ran good, and I really trust this guy. Has 112,000 miles on it too. Thanks in advance.
LOL told ya I didnt no much about em. The rotor hardly moves. I do know when I spin it fast enough after it tries to fire , it sometimes sounds like its trying to backfire like the timing is way off.
there's a good start. i had the same thing happen to a now defunct motor, when it gave up about 6 or so teeth. with a new set of gears, i was back on the road, running like a top.
Btw is there a need for the smog pump on this engine?[/QUOTE]
well, if you need to pass smog, yes, you'll need it. however, after my bro in law got done with this truck and i bought it, it no longer had a smog pump. the further i got intoworking on this truck, the more i realized, i would'nt let my bro in law, change the air in my tires!! p.s.-if it turns out you need a new set of gears, make sure you get the steel set. they are a little more spendy, but also a big advantage over the carbon fibre set.
