I was wondering if i could drop a 2002 Explorer engine in my 92 explorer becuase mine has a bad cylinder. I have access to a 2002 engine that my buddy is givin to me and was hopin it would fit right in (engine mounts, etc.)
Now i dont kno if i would need a new computer or not. help would be appreciated.
I'm almost certain they moved motor mounts between 1st gen (to '94) and 2nd gen ('95-'01). I wouldn't be at all surprised if they moved motor mounts again in going to the 3rd gen. An '02 V6 will, I believe, be an SOHC engine, because I think they discontinued the V6 OHV in Explorers around 2000 (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
I suppose I should ask, is he offering you a V6 or a V8?
I could be wrong, but basically I would be REALLY surprised if this were an easy drop in. You would certainly need an '02 computer for the engine he's giving you, which could require some significant electrical modification. It would almost certainly require some modification/fabrication to physically get the engine in. You also may need a different transmission (not necessarily a bad thing, the A4LD isn't the most reliable transmission on the road today).
Not to say that it can't be done. Anything's possible with enough time, money, patience, and know-how. If you pursue this, let us know how it goes.
have a very close look and see if the block castin from the 02 is even close to the casting from the 91. measure size and check emission components and all the other crap to see if anything will match up. you might be able to just take a few parts and swap them around to make the new engine work with the old electronics. if your lucky
maybe there is more info on the ENGINES forum at the botom of the mainpage
good luck
