I need to switch out my rear U Joint on 1992 XLT Ex. Neither my 7/16 nor my 1/2 inch wrench would fit over the nut on the bracket flange. Umm is it a metric size ? I dont have much money and I need to buy that tool only. Can anyone tell my what size that wrench is ?
Also it a nut that has a star pattern ( for lack of a better term ) only on the outside of the bolt oppposit a star nut. Not octoganol or hex either. What are these called ? Is it a neccessary step to drop that bracket / flange along with the entire drive shaft ? or can you undo the pins and bang out the trunnion while you are under the truck ? Any reccomendations are helpful. I normally use my Haynes manual but mine is MIA.
yeah, and it's a 12 point metric also... I didn't have one in my set and had to go buy a set of 12 point boxed end metric wrenches... I've never left the flange on, just dropped the whole shaft and worked on it out from under the car... IMO that's the best way, you'll have a hard time pressing that joint back in under the car.
Call around to U-Joint shops... the one I used in AR installed for free if I bought their joints. They were a couple dollars more than the ones at AutoZone but hey, they beed blasted my yolks, checked the slip joint for wear and re-packed it, installed the new joints, checked the drive shaft balance and re-painted it for about $40.
Good Luck!

Thanks for responding. WOW 40 bucks is a good deal. I cant get any cheaper than the local hourly wage of 80 bucks I think ? I already bought the part so I will yank it off today and if the rear joint goes well I will do the fron as well even though it shows no signs of wear. I will update the site with my results as far as time it took and trouble if I have any.
