Starting Problems 1994 4.0 L Super Cab

Help! I have a 1994 4.0 L Supercab with 140k. I am having a starting problem. Here goes, Several times in the past 3 months I have being going somewhere in the truck, park, go inside, come back out and truck won't start. Its turns over, tries to start, sometimes will start but will cut back off in a few seconds. After about 10 minutes the truck will crank like nothing was wrong. May not do this again for several weeks. After talking with Ford and several other repair shops we came to the conclusion it was the fuel pump.

$300.00 later, that was not the case. Replaced the fuel pump, assembly and all. Had the same problem yesterday. Took about 10 minutes for it to start. Finally start like there was never a problem I have expereinced the same problem when the truck is cold. It has done the same starting thing to me in the mornings when ready to leave for work or been gone on vacation.

I thought I was a good mechanic but this one has me down and out. I am ready to sell and buy something else. This particular truck has been trouble ever since I purchased it. Please Help, down and out with Ford Products.

I've been experiencing the same thing. It starts sometimes and other times when it doesn't start I have to wait 30 minutes for it to start. So, our mechanic said he had the same thing happen to another truck and the guy replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump and still had problems. He then replaced a delay fuel pump switch and he hasn't heard from him so I said replace that switch and off I went. The problem is still there. Now I'm wondering if it doesn't have something to do with the fact that you have to depress the clutch to start the engine. I read in the handbook about a starter interlock switch? What is that? Isn't it strange that after waiting for some time the thing starts up? Its like something gets depressed (stuck) and then fills back up with air or fluid or something. This is especially bad if the truck stalls- you get possibly one good start and then its lights out..Already checked the reset under the heater
unit in the floorboard. The truck is fantastic except for this weird problem. Really causing concern....

:-staun I had a friend that had the same problem with a Dodge Intrepid. I turned out to be the Crank Position Sensor. These are used for controling timing on Distributorless Ignition Systems (DIS). The 4.0L Ranger is a DIS engine.

Have you pulled the codes, do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key on?

This has happened to my 92 4.0 a few times, though no where near as frequently (as in twice a year) so the problem may be different. In my case it would happen if I stalled the engine while it was cold, or had an incomplete start. I know it's a computer malfunction because it delivers too much gas and the engine gets flooded. Much in the way our old carburetor fed vehicles did. Only problem is that some of the techniques such as holding the butterfly open for a minute don't seam to work so good with EFI. Each time you crank it over, the injectors open (remember it is an open loop system when the engine is cold) and more gas goes in making the problem worse. In my case, I pulled out the fuel pump fuse and within a few cranks it starts right up.

I think it may be the same problem because you say after sitting it starts, as though it needed time for some gas to evaporate. Next time try pulling the fuse, see if it starts. Then at least you will know what the problem is. If you figure out how to fix it, let me know!

Good luck
