Question Engine pinging

I have a 97 F 150 4.6 5 speed. I notice that it "pings" really bad on the hills unless I am using a midgrade fuel or better. I have had the timing checked and they tell me it is ok. I have replace plugs and wires with Motorcraft platinum. Air cleaner is new K&N filter. Any suggestions on what else I can do?

According to Ford, using higher grade fuel makes the pinging worse.... true? not true?

I have the the same year and engine as you. My pick up had the same pinging troubles that you mention. In response to the very same question I was told to clean the MAF sensor in the air intake tube. I did and the problem has vanished. No more pinging, runs great. Give it a try..

how many miles does your truck have? You may want to check the egr and related parts.

I had the same problem after trying to go back down to lower octane gas. I was able to get rid of the ping by weeninbg my 97 4.6 slowly. Half & Half then 60/40 then 80/20. On the 80/20 tank the pinging went away. From that point on, I have used nothing higher than 87 Chevron.

My 97 F150, 4.6L has pinged on 87 octane gas in the 3 years I have owned it. I run 93 octane through it....no pinging....and it runs better.

I would check the MAF sensor like others said. If the K&N is over oiled it could get the MAF and throttle body oily and foul it up. It could be carbon buildup too, try Seafoam or something through a vacuum line to clean the intake manifold. Higher octane gas will help pinging, but it is still better to fix what is wrong.

Thank you all for the great information. I will try cleaning this sensor and let you know.

I have just over 140000 kms (about 80,000 miles)
