I have a 96 Explorer fuel pump and supply is fine, recently stopped starting. I replaced ignition coil after receiving code. Now it wont start again no code on my Actron scanner, (same symtoms) it rained and the truck went dead 3 or 4 times. Then quit starting. I replaced the ignition coil again with a new one, the crankcase position sensor 1 month ago along with the EGR valve. Where should I check next? Any suggestions?
You need fuel and spark and right timing to start the motor. You said you had fuel, do you have spark? Hook up a timing light to one of the spark plug wires, any one, to check if you have spark first.
Hey Pax, I went out today to see if I got any spark. So I pulled off a wire near the back, got the timing light ready, had my wife fire it up, and the darn thing started! This the 2nd time. Before I replaced the ignition coil, it quit, wouldnt start, then a few days later after the rain stopped it started. I took it to Ford who said I had a bad ignition coil. Now, it rained here 2 days ago. It went dead on me 5-6 times on my drive home. Got home and about 1 hour later it would not start. It rained yesterday, and after all the checking I did it would not start. Then today its dry out, it starts. It was dry underneath the hood as far as water, so it must be something to do with the moisture. The truck is not garage kept (my Eddie Bauer, and my 5.0 use it). So now Im stumped.
Well, since it started, it doesn't help you to find the problem.
How old are the plug wires and spark plugs?
Check all the plug wires from the coil to the spark plugs, make sure they are not damaged or scraping some of the metal parts along the way.
Pull the spark plugs and check them if they are ok.
Other then that, I don't know what to tell you.
I had this problem with a car a long time ago and it was the plug wires. Once it starts again, try misting with some water (with a water bottle) over different sections of the engine and see if you can isolate the spot. Not sure if this will work but it is worth a try.
The first time I had this problem back in September, (after replacing the ignition coil) I went ahead and tuned it up, plugs, wires, oxygen sensor, pcv valve the whole shot. kjester's idea sounds great, Ill try that. And it started again today several times and running smooth.
