I have a 2001 Power Stroke with the 7.3 and auto trans. I have just programed my trugk comp with the Hypertech. It is like a total diffrent truck. Has anyone had this type of programer in use for any period of time. Tell me the the good experiances and bad.
First off welcome to the forum. Second I would suggest getting that tuner out of your truck until you get some gauges installed as to avoid blowing up your motor. Just my advice, I would also get a different tuner for the truck like a predator or SCMT. But the gauges are the most important thing!!! The intake and exhaust should be second and then the chip or tuner.
I would have to second what Rooster said. I have some experience with most all of the products out there and would recommend getting a Superchips or Edge Evolution. But first I tell my customers do these in this order: Gages, Exhaust, Intake then programmer. (or all at once if you can afford it)
Still trying to figure out what Chip is in my 02 PSD 7.3. I see alot of comments about the gauges. What gauges are recommended? For what components? Trans Temp? Water Temp? Air-Restriction gauge, etc. And as far as exhaust, I am putting a 2-chamber FM with a Y pipe comming off the 4 in end of muffler and running that out the back. Will this suffice? Are the guages a fairly easy assy? Any help will be appreciated. Tracker8
Hypertech gets a lot of bashing on this forum. I have one in a 97 F350 and am very satisfied. A dealer in my area sells all of the brands but sells more Hypertech than the others. I know many people who have bought them and have never heard anyone complain. Hypertech is as good as any other programmer as far as I can tell but with any programmer you want to get an Exhaust temp gauge.
I have a 2000 PSD Excursion 4X4 and ran into alot of trouble trying to find a programer that was compatable with the Excursion PATS system. First, I started with the Pedator and it would not download the stock tune. I spent countless hours on hold to seak to tech support and got nowwhere except for them offering that if I would remove the PCM and send it along with the Predator that they would look into it in a few weeks. Maybe next time. LOL
Next went to a local 4WD shop and told them the trouble I had with the PATS and the Predator and they said that the SCMT would work no problem. Wrong! After "they" installed it the truck wouldn't start due to the PATS being activated. They followed the instruction in the SCMT instruction manual for the PATS problem and it still wouldn't start. After a few hours on the phone with their tech support they got it going again. Thought I was going to be walking home.
Bottom line is that the only tuner that will work on my truck is the Hypertech III. I have been using it for a month or so with no problems. Also, I wasn't looking for a "tire smokin boost needle spinning" programmer but a little more HP to help that 8,000 lb brick move on down the road. I don't have any experiance with the other models but I will say that I'm pleased with what I have.
I have a Hypertech III in a '99 F250. I installed it about 2 months ago and absolutely love it! It is a daily driver and the programmer makes it a hoot to drive. I haven't pulled anything with it (wouldn't recommend it without a EGT gauge), but for transportation, you can't beat it.
I want to order a set of gauges in the next few weeks....anyone have any recommendations on brand and source?
