Preventative maintenance

I have a 2001 psd with 114,000 miles. I have recently replaced 2 batteries, glow plug relay, fan belt, and starter. I have done routine maintenance (oil and filter changes, lube, transmission service, etc). Amazingly, the brake pads are only worn about 50%, so have not repacked front wheel bearings yet. Would it be a good idea to replace alternator, water pump, hoses, etc/? At what mileage do these begin to fail?

Not to sound sarcastic but that is kind of a loaded question. Hoses do not wear out based on mileage, but rather time. I would say every 5 years or so is a good time for hoses. The pump and alternator will be effected by mileage and or hours of engine running to be exact. I have 180k on my original water pump, but I am on my third alternator. If I remember correctly the power steering hoses can fail sometimes. I would take a look at the wheel bearings you mentioned. Another problem area is the stock air box, check the air inlet after the air filter but before the turbo. There should be no grit, and the leading edges of the turbo fins should be just about sharp. Not looking like they were sand blasted. A little oil in the intake is ok just not grit. If so you will want to replace your air air box assembly with either an after market or get a Ford AIS air box assy. Note: some of these aftermarket air intakes can be expensive. Do not think more$$$ is better. One of the very best is only about $150 +-.

Don't know about the 2001 but I took my 2002 in to repack the the spindle bearings and was told it is a sealed unit, no way to lube them.
