Post Fuel pump not engaging

Its a 94 Ranger, 3.0 auto, x-cab, 4x2, 180K miles. It was having a problem of not starting, I put a new fuel pump and relay in it a month ago, and haven't had any problems at all with it until today. When I turn the key, it will crank real strong but won't fire up at all. I don't hear the fuel pump kick in, and the check engine light doesn't come on either when I turn the key to the "run" position. All other warning lights come on though. Today I pulled the relay, and jumped it, and the fuel pump kicked in. My best guess is that it must be an ignition or wiring problem. Can anybody give me some tips, or places to look or what needs to be replaced??

If the pump runs when you jump it I would think that either the relay is bad or it's not being activated. Start with checking for power to active the relay, if you have it then try the relay. I'm not real familar with the 94s but I know my 1989 FP relay was activated by the ECU relay.

I'm pretty sure the inertia switch comes after the relay (?) but it's worth checking anyway. Pull it's harness and check for voltage, and make sure the reset switch isn't popped. Just did a fuel pump and relay on my 94 2.3l and I sure hope I don't have the same problem. Keep us informed.

Thanks for the tips, this problem would show up once in a great while, but it would always eventually engage. I have learned to listen for the fuel pump and for the check engine light to come on before I crank it over. When I got the new relay for the fuel pump, I saved it because that didn't seem to make it any better, so I replacd the EEC relay with the original fuel pump relay today, and now it fires right up. I am still a little skeptical about it, but I think that its finally fixed.

Many thanks too all...
Jeff

You know, I was just thinking...does the power to the fuel pump get cut off if the engine temperature is high or there is a loss of oil pressure? I know the engine shuts it's self down somehow if one of these two problems occur, but I'm not sure if it does it via the pump or the ignition. Either way, I think a temperture gage for a Ranger and the oil pressure switch are fairly cheap and it's easy to install (temperture sensor on the heater core hose and pressure switch snaps in on side of motor). Find out for sure if these can shut down the fuel pump before trying one of these fixes.
