OhMan'o'Man'o'Man
Not so long ago Built up a nice mild 400. Decided to go with Edelbrock for everything.
So 400 mi. later I get this sudden low power and knocking noise coming from under a va.cover. My first thought of course was a collapsed lifter right, these things sometimes happen right, right? So I find the loose rocker and go to pull the lifter out and geese it's not coming out very easy.I ended up using a long pair of needle nose pliers and really forcing it out. Otherwise the lifter was free in its bore. Low and behold about an eighth of an inch of lifter is gone and .210" is worn off the cam lobe. So I phoned Edelbrock and yes I used the supplied cam and lifter lube and yes I used a good lubricant and yes I followed proper breakin procedure and yes I checked the rocker clearance and yes I used a degree wheel and yes the lifter bore was specd. and the lifter was free and no there wasn't any spring bind. Finally when Edelbrock was out of things to burn me on they say, "Send it to us with a note saying 'PLEASE warranty my cam' and we'll see what we can do."
Edelbrock also tells me that their lifters are not hardened..?
Now, I have built a number of engines from Fords and Chevs and Minneapolis-Moline's to Cat's and Detroits and they HAVE ALL had hardened lifters and this has never happened OR am I really,REALLY out to lunch? Has it Happened to anybody else before or do I just sound like a raving nutcase and it is something that happened due to MY error somewhere?
Either way I am very upset because now I am without a truck and have metal all through my new engine and have to send a note saying "PLEASE warranty my cam." No joke, thats what he said to put.
Feeling better now
Matt
