4x4 Problem
'97 Ranger. I put my truck in 4 wheel drive the other day and then had a really hard time getting it to disengage. Had to play around with a lot, reset the computer, sharp turns, backing up, all the tricks I could think of to get it to disengage. It finally did but now it feels like the 4x4 keeps trying to kick on in the left front wheel. It doesn't do it all of the time but often enough. It is a little disconcerting to be driving down the highway and have, what feels like, the four wheel drive tugging on the left front wheel for a couple of seconds and then letting go. There is a thumping noise (not too loud) when this happens as well. Anybody have any ideas?

not real familiar with these newer trucks but i will suggest to you like i siggest to all the others....take'em apart and clean them. make sure everything is in good working order and there isn't any real bad gouges or scrathes or teeth missing. if i am not mistaken i beleive there is a company now that produces manual locking hubs for these new trucks and that would be my other suggestion

get rid of the auto hubs and buy manual locking ones. theres too much to go wrong with the auto lockers. if you dont wanna do that, do like fishy said and take em apart and clean em. dirt and road grime isn't good for that electronic crap

I'll probably just clean them for now being a poor, broke student and all. I'm going to check with my warranty company first and see if maybe this is covered anyway. If not, how hard is this to do? Do you need any special tools? About how long should it take to do this?Thanks.
