Hi Bob and welcome to the forum 
On the OBD2 equipped (approx 1995 and newer) vehicles you can't read the codes without a scan tool. If you have an Autozone close by they will scan it for free. Just don't let them sell you any parts until you're sure what it needs. If you get it scanned make note of the actual code that is recieved, not just the description of the code, and post it here and someone will be able to help with it.
