Kinda long but I have read all the way to page 14 and I still can't find what I need so here goes.I have a 92 aero.and about 10 months ago the shifter went out so I got a new one at the dealer(you know the CHEAP aluminum part)what a pain to install and ever sience then the key would'nt come out.So i've been driving like that for a while and just used 2 keys.About a month ago I went out started the car and drove away came home and it would'nt shut off(key went really lose)so lucky I was at home I got out the torx and pulled the white box on the column and shut it off.So basicly I've been driving it "hot wired"and that wasnt to big a prob. Here comes the trouble I go to get emissions and they won't do it so I come home tear it all apart even the shifter so I figured out the two plastic pieces that I need but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the plastic pieces in or out.I'm sure someone has a link or some really good info. that I'm missing. Thanks all you'r great.
p.s. anyone know where to get that leaky flex exhaust pipe after the cat.THANKS
A GUY ON E-BAY ALWAYS HAS THAT PIPE FOR SALE, FOR 36.00 PLUS SHIPPING. I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT SIZE THE PIPES ARE, BUT I PUT A STRAIGHT PIPE, ADAPTER, AND A COUPLE OF CLAMPS FOR ABOUT 11.00, AND HAVEN'T HAD ANY TROUBLE AT ALL . SORRY I CAN'T HELP YOU WITH THE COLUMN.
I'm not exactly clear on your problem, but maybe this will help. Under the collumn below the ignition switch, there is a small pin hole. When a thin rod is inserted, it will depress a button on the ignition switch. Once you do that, turn and pull the ignition switch (with the key in it) and the whole thing will come out. Easy job.
Ok so here we go again I have long since replaced the exhaust from the cat back. But it's time for emissions again and I have been driving this thing for the past 5yrs by reaching under the column and using the ignition box, without keys to drive the vehicle.Tomarrow I am going for the test and I know a "Ghetto" shop that will probably pass me.
As you can see lately I have put a bunch of money into this thing and I would like to fix the column and use a key again and make everything proper, does anyone have any sugestions or should I just find a used column and hope it doesn't break.
Thanks
What condition is your current column in? Is there a lock cylinder? Linkage to the ignition switch? You can probably get a junk yard special linkage from a van that hasn't been abused. But you will have to get a new lock cylinder with keys.
The column is in fine shape except the linkage the goes from the lock cylinder to the ignition, it is a sort of plastic with a hole for the ignition box.I replaced the shift shaft a few years ago so I have an idea whats going on I'm just not sure it is a serviceable part. The sad thing is the column has never been abused it's been in our family it's entire life so I don't want to replace the column and have the new one break.
Thanks
