97 Ranger 4x4 check engine light

97 Ranger 4x4 check engine light
For about two weeks now the check engine light has been on on my 97 ranger. The engine has been running fine and I've had no problems mechanically with the truck so far. But I would like to take this blarring orange light out of my face. Now the light comes on as soon as the truck is started and is illuminted until the key is turned off....occasionally it has decided to go off but only for a hour or two. My driving is mainly city driving and I have 87,000 miles on it. From the information I have gathered so far I need to go and have the computer diagnosed. But isn't there a way to do that myself. On the 95 maxima my dad owns he was able to put his computer into self test mode and figure out which code number the computer was reading. Is this possible on the ranger? If not how much does a diagnostics cost?
Finally, and this may be a long shot, what is the most educated guess as to what my problem is?
Any help anyone has to offer would be much appreciated.
