What headers are best for a '86 302EFI, AOD, 2wd? Does anyone make long-tube headers, because i've only seen shorty ones? If you have the above-mentioned truck, Which headers do you prefer?
thanks
If going with headers on an EFI hauler, you're either going to need dual O2 sensors, or run single exhaust and have the O2 sensor installed in the collector. Would likely make the most sense to see how your rig is set up with the stock exhaust, and set it up in a similar fashion with the headers.
run a single exhaust into 3 inch pipe, and eliminate the worries of dual o2 sensors. Good power and great sound
I agree here. For average street use and pretty much any off-road situation, single 3 inch is the way to go. It provides better exhaust scavenging, better mileage, and a nice crisp sound without ****ing off your neighbors. You'll notice a nice improvement on off idle throttle response as well. Real world, useable power upgrade right there. Dual exhaust really only starts to perform at rpms most of us never see, unless drag racing, and even then a good single exhaust set-up will shine as well.
The '86 has a single O2 sensor in the passenger exhaust header right above the flange where the Y pipe bolts up. It is a single wire, if you put the sensor further down the exhaust system you may have to go to a HEGO (heated exh gas oxy sensor) 2 or 3 wire (heated) O2 to get it hot enough to do it's job. It would be easiest to just weld a bung in the new headers near where the OG one is in the stock one. I think that's ('86) the only EFI year they did that because it lists a different header for newer years, at least for the 5.8 which has a single HEGO sensor in the Y and the EGR connection in the header.
