How do I set timing curve?
I just bought an adjustable vacuum advance kit (from Crane), with the new springs for mechanical advance too, for my duraspark II distributor. I've got the distributor apart, which springs do I use? How the H-E-double hockey sticks, do I know how to adjust the timing? Initial right now is about 12 degrees BTC. Not sure about final.
A bit about the engine: 460 with 10:1 comp, D3VE heads (closed chamber/92cc/stock valves/mild porting), do not have a clue for camshaft, it's definitely not stock, has beautiful lope, Holley 750 with Performer RPM intake, and stock exhaust manifolds. It was pinging a little bit with the stock timing curve at about 3500 rpm on 92 octane. I richened the mixture on the carbureator, helped some. If it makes a difference I don't know, but it's mated to a C6 with a 2800 rpm stall torque converter. Hence, the pinging started, just about when I needed the motor to start making horsepower.
How do I go about measuring all this stuff to get the most from this engine? Can someone explain to me how one is to go about setting up proper timing, from reading timing marks to putting in the right springs, etc. Just basically the proper tuning of this wonder called an engine!
Thanks y'all,
Rad
The mechanical advance plate in the bottome will have two sides to it, 21 and 16 for example by switching what side the tab is inside the notch will limit the overall advance. For my engine, I am running a total of 34 degrees. That intial and the mecanical degrees added together. The adjustable vacum advance will allow you to limit how fan the vacum side advances the distirbutor. You can also call crane and they can help you out some more. They have a great tech line for on the spot info. That ia about all I can tell you from just typing away. I am more of a hands on guy when it comes to setting the timing and so on.
