Guys I am building a 351m into a 400 and looking for a crank has turned out to be more than what I bargained for. I have called locally and was able to make some headway but have a question. I called NAPA and they came up with 2 numbers for a 400 crank. One of the forging numbers that they showed was like this
5ma or a 5mab or a 5mac.............the other was a cite-b or something like that. Does anybody know which one to get or what is the difference if it matters. This made me curious cause the "cite-b" or whatever was twice the price of the other. Does this make any sense?
5M, 5MA, 5MAB are definitely the Ford casting codes for a 400 crank. I've never heard of a casting code of C1TE-B or CITE-B for a 400 crank or any 335 series engine. 351M casting codes are 1K, 351C codes are 4M or 4MA.
One more question. Who has actually built a stroker out of the 400 with the 240 I6 connecting rods and stuff? Is it worth it compared to a "straight up" 400? I mean, are the performance gains worth it or not really. I am going through the whole engine and it is at the machine shop right now getting the clean up and the works. But still haven't decided what route to take with the engine. To stroke or not to stroke..................that is the question.
