Hello, new member here......there is a 79 250 4wd in my area for sale. The body is not to bad, the bed and cab corners are the worst part. The bed will need replaced. The motor is a 351M,and I assume a c6 tranny, live axle in the front, dont know the gears in the diffs. Dude wants $800, but will take $700. It seems to run good, but when hot, looses a little oil pressure. What is a good price for a truck like this? Or am I stupid for not getting it right now? I am thinking of driving it for a couple winters, then maybe restoring it frame up. What are some things to look for in these trucks that might be a problem? Thanks in advance.
hi you have the makins of one fine truck for small $$$ it should have a dana 60 in the rear and dana 44hd in the front likely 3.70 to 4.10 ratios .leaf springs all around and a good solid frame. this would be an easy truck to slip a 460 into (motor mounts ,rear sump oil pan and a few minor details) a killer paint job, 36" mud tires on chrome rims a little interior upgrade(seat ,stereo, carpet, gauges) 4" lift and you would have a real head turner with the ability to go off roading. i hope this helps and welcome to the old trucks
700 is a good price, but be sure and drive it at least up to 60 mph, just to see how it steers and brakes. These old trucks are built like a battleship, but have a lot of parts , that once they get high mileage on them, will be wore and need rebuilt/replaced . Finding all of these "parts" and their costs and availability, sets the tone for how much money a restoration will cost. The worse shape a truck is in, the MORE money it costs to restore. Keep in mind that to restore a old truck, is a labor of love, not a good investment of dollars spent . good luck on your project
Ck. the frame. The rest of the stuff can be replaced. I had a '79 that the frame rotted. Only thing holding it together was the plow frame. Great truck. I'd grab it in a second for 700.00 just for the parts.
Thanks for all the input.....I drove it home about three hours after looking at it the first time. Something in my gut told me this was a good deal. The truck drives like a tank, and really is pretty solid. I told myself when I went to drive it, if it makes a bunch of clunking, and banging in the suspension I would pass on it. But it seems pretty tight. Theres some pulsation when braking though, maybe the rotors are warped. I already have some people that want to buy it at my work. I have to keep telling myself that this is not a go-fast truck, its a work horse truck. One thing that it has is the front axle is always locked in to the transfer case; there are no lock out hubs on the front, Not too crazy about that feature, but good for the snow tho!! I think I will drive it this winter and see if I want to hang onto it; if not I know I can get what I paid for it. I used to have a 78F150 4wd shortbox 351M c6, I loved that truck, but it was way too rusty for me to fix. The frame was starting to go on it, so I decided to sell it. Ever since then I have had a hunger for another one, but dont know if a 250 is right for me. I am glad it is a longbed tho,and a standard cab. I dont care for the extended cab trucks. My personal preference. Well I will frequent this board and the Explorer board as well, I have a 99 sport also.
By the way, all credit goes to my wife for finding it for me. She said "I found something you might like, but I'm afraid you might go buy it if I tell you what it is". Obviously she told me. How cool is that??
sounds like a good deal, my girlfriend is pretty cool about stuff like that, she tells me when she sees deals around. its good to have support. my dad had to fight for years over his 55 bel aire
