Just curious on the installation on a new egr valve. And curious if there is anything I need to know as far as anything special I need to do when one is replaced I have a 97 F-150 with the 5.4 4X4 and help would be greatly appreciated
The only trouble you may have is the copy tube that screws into the EGR valve, try to do the swap while the engine is warm, it won't lock up so bad. Other than that its held to the motor by two screws, easy job. If you are doing this to clear a EGR 0401 low flow error good luck. Its most likely clogged ports inside the t-body. I changed all three EGR componets before I checked there. Listen to the advice on this site, will save you time and money.
Thanks for the help I am trying to get rid of that code as far as the throttle body what do I need to do there? Did you get yours to finally clear. Also any help with a hesitation problem it seems like at 40 - 50 the motor seems to bog at WOT but after that it seems to pick it self back up. Ive changed the fuel filter twice the first time it seemed to help but this time its still there. Would the egr code be a cause of BAD gas milage it seems like ever since I got that dern code I can't pass a gas station with out my truck coughing for more fuel. Like I said thanks for the reply it makes me feel somewhat better about changing the egr valve just hope it fixes it.
your very close to doing that to getting rid of the code. The clog is actually in the neck that connect to the back side of the TB. First you will need to get the gaskets for the job, three total, two if you don't seperate the TB from the curved neck. One for the TB, one for the neck where it meets the head and one for the EGV valve where it connects to the TB assembly. Once you have the assembly off the motor you will see the build up. Just carefully clean it out with TB/carb cleaner, a screw driver and a coat hanger. The two ports holes are about 1/4 inch around. Both of my ports were clogged to the point a tooth pick wouldn't fit.
A few important points.
-remember to disconnect your battery as you do have to remove a few connectors. This will also clear the error code from the PCM. I have a few other postings about this, please seee them as one of the users here gave me the FORD process for resetting the PCM correctly, good info to have.
-you will want to take the copper riser tube off the back of the EGR valve when its warm, if you wait until the motor is cold this process step is much harder.
-Put a shop rag in the opening left after you remove the TB assembly from the motor so that nothing can drop into the hole and really ruin your day.
Hope this helps-
Oh ya,when I had the error myself I also had a loss of power, bad gas milage and a idle issue when coming to a stop but never when I was driving at a steady speed.
Can you explain why its not an issue on the 5.4? Maybe I chose the wrong engine platform?? Even though I love my truck its also good know about other platforms so when I upgrade, which will be a used truck, I would like to know what to watch out for.
thank you in advance for your reply
The 5.4 uses a different TB and EGR, I've never heard of a 5.4 with plugged EGR tubes. I have a 5.4 with the "insufficient flow" code and checked the tubes, replaced DPFE, and replaced EGR... still has CEL. Next is reference voltage check and vacuum solonoid.

Well, you have now.
My EGR port was clogged very badly. I had to take the whole intake manifold spacer off and clean it for about 2 hours before I got clean like I wanted it.
I am having similar problems with a 98 4.6. Does this clogged port thing fix it or does the EGR still need replacing? The major problem I have is poor gas mileage and bad acceleration after 30 to 40 mph. My code reader says excessive EGR flow not sure of the code # already cleared it. Is this a different fix?

Well, I think mostly the clogged ports in the throttle body will only cause bad idle. And you will probably only be able to tell this while at idle. But after cleaning my ports in the throttle body REALLY well my mpg went from 10-11 to about 14-15. So saved a lot of money.
I would probably clean the MAF, TB, Intake manifold spacer, and IAC. Clean all these really well. Also, learning from my own mistake, replace ALL gaskets that you take off, TB to Intake manifold spacer, EGR to Intake manifold spacer, etc. I have major vacuum leaks when I didn't change my gaskets. Gaskets are about 50 cents for one. Really cheap.
