When you smoke in your car (assuming you do) how do you dispose of your cigarettes? Are you one that throws them out the window, or do you use an ashtray. If so, do you empty it in a trashcan or would you/have you dumped it in a parking lot?
Hmmm. I smoked for the better part of 10 years. I can honestly say that I have done them all. I have tossed them out the window. I have filled up my ashtray, to dispose of in a trash can when cleaning out my car. I have also given the quick-dump in a parking lot. Is there a reason for either of them yes and no. Have tossed out window if ashtray was too full; same goes for the parking lot quick-dump. Utilized trash can when cleaning out car just complete the cleaning process.
yeah, I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, but I grew up in a subdivision, and for some reason, I couldn't figure out why there were so many people tossing their cigarettes out the window. I just remember growing up, and tons of cigarettes laying in the curb. It was pretty gross, but I do appreciate anyone who does dispose of their cigarettes properly. It's not my business what you do, but when I have to deal with them, it's no bueno.
I have a question for smokers. How is it that even when threatened by cancer and bad health you keep doing it? I mean i know i know Nicotene but I know probably 10 people that quit smoking without any major health problems. Why cant some people quit. I would think that i could get over the craving if the risks were as bad as they are.
EDIT: Im asking cause ive been getting my dad to quit and have had like NO luck.
I smoked for about 10 years and for the most part, I used the ash tray or an old bottle with water in it. I didn't want to risk starting fires when it was dry and I hate it when I get hit in the windshield with a butt someone in front of me tosses out.
Rustbucket,
I just quit smoking 2 months ago. Let me tell you this, it is VERY HARD to quit if you have smoked for a long time. I just recently found out that I had an anxiety problem that I had been covering up with the smoking! Now I am dealing with that and doing OK, but I will NEVER take up smoking again now that I am out of its grip. The cravings go away, but the habit takes a LONG time to drop!
Grats Dakota!!!!
Smoking has to be the hardest thing in the world to kick. It's a testament to your strength to give it up.
After playing on and off with smoking, I finally gave it up for good about 5 years ago. Sometimes, I still reach for a smoke when I get in the car. It's crazy, but even after 5 years I forget that I don't smoke anymore heh.
I used to joke that smoking takes 10 years off a persons life, but they are the last 10 years, and they aren't that good anyways.
I have a new attitude about it now though. Next month I will be 41. I haven't worked in over 5 years. I have an oxygen machine in my house, and some little O2 tanks when I go someplace. I battle with coughing fits, most nights, and half the day. I have inhalers that I have to use, and get out of breath if I run to the living room.
I have a grandbaby on the way. I tell you what man, my biggest hope for the future is to somehow get better so I can teach my grandkid the guitar, and ride him around on the back of a mountain bike.
I have no fear of dieing at all, Jesus has taken care of that, but I do want to stay in this world a while longer to get to know my grandkid.
I don't blame cigarettes, I blame myself, because when I started having trouble, I kept on smoking and wasn't serious about doing anything about it.
Oh lol.... to answer the question. I have never dumped an ashtray on the ground (that I remember) I used to fill up the ashtray, then use a coke bottle or something
well I smoked for 22 years and quit 12 days ago, thanks to zyban and the patch it is going well the cravings arn't bad but the habbit is the hard part it feels like I have been forgetting to do something (like an undone task)...
Did I throw my butts out the window??? yes as a teenager I did. Then I went into the Army and before going to chow we had to "police" the grounds for cigarette butts and any other litter and let me tell you, you don't want to eat with THAT smell on your hands, its enough to make you puke... That was the last time I ever intentionally threw a cigarette butt or anything else on the ground... now if I'm not near a trash can i'll put whatever it is in my back pocket until i find a trash can... when driving i always used the ashtray and trash can...
Getting hit in the windshield is nothing. Having it fly in your open window can be disastrous. I've heard of cars burning to the ground because the driver tossed a butt out the window that came in the rear window and landed in the back seat. Don't forget about motorcyclists, either--I've had several close calls with flying lit butts. I'd hate to have to chase you down and shoot you for throwing a lit butt in my general direction (deadly force is justified in this state when someone is harming someone else).
Don't make me sic Smokey the Bear on you, either...
I think cigarette butts should count under the $500 littering fine...

I also have a question. This one is for all the "healthy" non smoking fat people. You know who you are. Why do you continue to eat in the face of diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc? Another question.
How about all you lazy bodies out there. You know who you are too. The ones who never get any sun because you sit indoors in the A/C all the time. Why do you continue to laze around in the face of sleeping disorders, eating disorders, butt sores, etc.? Would think you'd know better.
Last but not least, how about all you social drinkers out there? Why do you continue to do it? Even drinking only as much as a six pack a day drastically increases your chances of developing serosis, among other liver disorders - not to mention possible eating disorders as well.
Point is, EVERYTHING will kill you! Enjoy your life and quit nagging people. Bad enough the government does enough of that. Besides, you'd have to be a real hippocrite to knock someone elses vice when you've got just as many of your own which are just as bad. People need to work hard and live clean(not hurting anyone else). Then take some time to enjoy things a bit - tommorow just might be your last. My father smoked from when he was a teenager. He died at age 58. Not from smoking - he was in AWESOME shape! Worked hard - like a real man should. Many 20 year olds would be admiring themselves in the mirror like vain little fairies if they were built like him. He fell from a scaffold and broke his neck. Was quad for the last three months of his life on this eath. Enjoy it - you never know, you may not be able to walk tommorrow, or you may even be dead.
I'm not ready to quit yet personally. I did just read in a major scientific journal that even if you smoke up to 3 packs a day, if you quit by the age of thirty you will suffer no long term effects and your body will totally recover.
PS They (whoever "they" are) say it's harder to quit the butts than Heroin.
I quit drinking 3.5 years ago and I quit smoking 1.5 years ago. I think quitting drinking was easier, although perhaps due to circumstances. It's easier to quit when faced with certain death.
Anyways, the real bad cigarette cravings lasted 3 weeks but I still had occassional strong cravings for several months. Especially about 2-3 hours after being around smokers.
Anyone who thinks that statistics or warnings could possibly have any effect whatsoever on an addicted smoker has no idea what he is talking about. Non-addicts do not understand addicts and never will. So I just try to politely dismiss any quitting 'advice' from non-addicts since they have no clue. Just smile and nod a lot.
Back to the original question- I never used the ashtray in any of my vehicles. I'd put other stuff in there to keep others from using the ashtray as well. The stale smell was horrible, even to a smoker. Every butt for 25 years went out the window.
still smoke, and used to throw them out, but now use a plastic cup type ashtray half filled with baking soda. it butts them better and helps cut down on the odors.
When I was finished w/ a ciggartette I would hold it out the window and roll the remainder in my fingers until enough tobacco was showing that I could grab it w/ my fingers and pull it out to fly away(all w/ one hand). It can take some practice to master, but seemed the best compromise to me(tobacco is biodegradeable right?). I didn't like using the ashtray to snuff them out (or at all, really) it made the cab stink too much. I then put the butts in an empty water bottle/empty cigg. pack. If it was too dry outside to do this I would spit it the cap of the water bottle and snuff it that way. I tried the partially filled can thing for a while but it getting spilled once was enough to put a stop to it. I like rc581s' idea though.
Last year, I was one of 30,000 fire-evacuees living out of my F350PSD for three weeks with my husband, two dogs, cat and two horses in the trailer behind. While many fires burned across our whole province (and in California too) -- one fire here was the worst. It consumed 64,200 acres and wiped out an entire town with it's primary industry, none of which will be rebuilt. It was started by a discarded cigarette -- discarded believe it or not by a volunteer firefighter. Food for thought.
