I need to replace my '03 4x4 6.0 Ex with something that will also haul 6 or 7 people several times per month and then load up with window, door, and cabinet samples, sometimes pull a boat, and hit 65k-70k per year. I need 6000 gvwr and I am thinking about a E350 6.0 conversion van. Question? Why is the torque and HP so much lower on the E350 6.0 than the Ex or SD? Is the 6.0 and 5 spd built the same with the difference being the programing? Has anybody been on a long ride in a 6.0 E350, is the noise level more or less than the Ex or SD?
I have seen this answered every way possible. Does anybody know for sure? Is it a mistake to get the 6.0L in an E350 Chateau and possibly increase the power and not worry to much about heat and noise.
I can't honestly tell you about the noise level, but the reason the power is lower is simply because the intercooler and a few other engine externals are smaller/nonexistant on the van for space reasons. The engine is also slightly detuned in order to reduce heat- the smaller cooler and radiator cannot handle the heat input generated by the truck tunes.
I have a e-350 6.0 and the noise level is not bad. at low speeds you can tell its a diesel, but it is not bad inside if you get the carpet and head liner pkg. at higher speeds it is a lot quieter. The reason for less hp is that there is not much room for airflow around the engine and it runs very hot. the engine barely fits in the van. I would hate to have to work on it, you can't get to anything. The van has plenty of power as is and should be good for what you need. You also can carry more in a van than a pickup truck sometimes. why don't you go test drive one before you decide, you may like the van.
We have owned 3 E150 conversion vans but really like our 03 Excursion 6.0L because it never feels overloaded or underpowered. Problem is I need to get in a new ride by 12/31/04 and Excursion SUV doesn't qualify according to accountant. I can't find a E350 6.0L to test drive in Tulsa, but I am now hooked on Ford diesel and 5 speed. Thanks for your comments.
