Oxygen sensor question

I have an 88 Ranger, 2.9l w/5 speed and the o2 sensor is not working. The sensors are kinda expensive so i was wondering how much difference it would make if I bought one. One of my mechanic friends said it wouldn't on my truck, but if it might improve mileage would it be worth it for 60$.

$60 for a sensor for the 2.9? Do some shopping and you *might* do better. I remeber when my carbed Isuzu truck had that ~$30 one-wire sensor....now these heated sensors are something, aren't they?

IF the sensor is truly crudded up, then it will help. Usually, since the sensor is where it is in the emissions chain, it only fortells of other issues.

You can google search "clean an oxygen sensor" or something to that effect and see what comes up. If you have to get by for a bit, that should come up with tips for you.

The O2 sensor is used to determine the correct amount of fuel required at a given point in time when the engine is in closed loop operation. It works together with the other sensors, such as the engine coolant temperature sensor, throttle position sensor, MAF, etc to do this. Rich mixtures burn cool, lean mixtures burn hot; the sensor makes use of this fact and sends info back to the ECM and in turn the mixture is adjusted. Should the O2 sensor fail, the system will fall back onto preprogrammed defaults. Usually this results in poorer performance, emissions issues, possibile driveability issues, and probably gas mileage will suffer.

Pull the codes and run the pinpoint tests before replacing it.

I replaced one on a Bronco II I owned for less than $50.

If the O2 sensor is totally shot the truck will probably run like crap and get similar mileage. What kind of mileage are you getting right now?

Skagit: There are tests for your o2 sensor with a voltmeter. Fairly simple to do.
As far as replacement - check NAPA - as I recall they are around $38 - 40 somewhere in there. Rockauto - online parts store - has them for $35 and $43 for a genuine Motorcraft.

Hope this is helpful to you,

Russ
