up and down idle

I have a 1990 F150 5.0 with a 5 speed tranny. My question is the engine idles high and low almost dies then tries to run again. less than a 60 second cycle. makes it hard to get going when you let out the clutch. Any help would be appreciated.

possible vacumm leak

check for vacumm leaks in the vacumm system. does it smoke when idleing? does the exhaust burn your eyes? if that is the case, I am almost 100% sure thats what the problem is.

Thanks for the help, any ideas where to get a vacuum line diagram for a 1990 F150 with a 5.0 and 5 speed with a/c and power brakes?

vacumm diagram

the diagram should be on the airbox, at least thats where it was on both my 89's if not, follow the vacumm lines from the vacuum tree on the upper intake, and make sure all of them have good connections at both ends. just inspect all the lines for good sized holes or breaks. Hope that helps. Timmy
