2.9 question

i just got a 91 ranger with a bad 2.9. now i am wondering what to do with it. i have some good 302s laying around. so the question is to rebuild the 2.9 or drop in a 302. what kind of power can a 2.9 put out with headers, cam, intake, ect? and how expensive are the parts for the 2.9? i rebuild my own engines but never messed with V6's before. thanks for any info.

I would say if you have acces to a good 302, go with that. 2.9's are good little motors as long as you don't overheat them, but a 302 is a Ranger owners dream for their truck. Of course you will have to upgrade the tranny as well, but I would bet it would end up cheaper than building a 2.9.

It depends on the truck, is it 2wd or 4wd. If its 2wd, I'd go with the 302. Lots of power, not a terribly hard job, makes for a eye catcher. But if its a 4wd, I'd rebuild a 2.9. You'd need a tranny & transfer case to mate up to a 302, and by that time it would be cheaper to rebuild. And if you do, I've got a fresh crankshaft at home for a 2.9 (.010" rods or mains, can't remember, but could find out for you), and another used one. Go to www.jamesduff.com if you want to put the 302 in, they have most of the parts you'll need.

hey thanks alot, the truck is a 2wd model. well i have a brand new 306, so i guess i should go with that. does anyone know the engine weight of the 2.9, or should i say the difference between 2.9 and a 5.0. i am kinda building this truck as a prerunner and just tryin to get my weights figured out. thanks again

I don't know for sure, but I'd bet that the V8 won't weigh much more if its got aluminum heads and intake on it
