Well, it looks like I am going to have to replace the front pump seal on the tranny. I was wondering how hard this is to do and if there is a better seal out there that will last longer since it seems to be a sore spot on that model, maybe a Viton seal if I knew what the dimensions were.
it's actually pretty simple to replace..after you remove the transmission.
Pull the torque convertor off..I took a screwdriver and hammer and puntcured the seal and pryed it out being careful not to scar the aluminum housing it sits in. Then i cleaned the area good..smeared sealent around the new seal and tapped it back in place.
Yeah, after you get the tranny out!LOL No kidding, i was under there tonight having a look and am pretty sure its going to be a treat seeing all the bolts for the dirve shaft etc are pretty rusted.
Get some liquid wrench and spray them really good a few days ahead of the time you plan on working on it. They are a 27 Torx for the front if I remember correctly..just keep a pair of vise grips handy in case. When i did mine for the first time they werent too bad. you only need to take the drive shaft off the rear side of the trans..it can stay connected to the rear axle. Once you get the front axle unbolted you can pull that one straight foward and out..might have to pry gently on the boot on the tcase to get it to pop off..DO NOT BEND THE BOOT as they are hard to replace from your local parts store.
I have a 93 /w a A4LD and the front seal leaks only when the tran gets hot. I put in a vary large Stacked Plate cooler in front and it ever leaked sence.
If the tran (mine) gets to cold like in the mornings it will not stift right, it needs the rad cooler plus the Stacked Plate cooler so that the tran doesn't get to cold like on morning start ups.
I had problems with the tran getting to hot and leaking from the front seal under loads like mountains (even without a load). when it leaked, it really leaked out a lot. All I had to do was let the tran cool off real good and it stop leaking.
Besides the leak the A4LD tran has been good for me, it's got 117k so far running a 4.0L towing up to 1 1/2ton /w load & trailer
I am going to run it for a week and if it still leaks I will probably take it in at this point, I have done a rediculous amount of work to this truck to get it up to snuff and really dont want to pull the tranny myself. Maybe in a week I might change my mind but I probably doubt it..lmao
