I know the hand tool topic has been beat to death...but I never see much about SK tools. I was just wondering how ACTUAL owners of SK tools would rate them compared to other brands (craftsman, snap-on, matco, mac ...). And I was also wondering if anybody owns the new sk "probox" and if they like it or not?
Have used SK on the farm for 20+ years. Good solid brand, no problems with returns. The only wrenches I have broke are 1/2" and 9/16" (while using cheaters). More comparable to Craftsman then Snapon or MAC.
I was given a set of used tools over twenty years ago. In it were some sk. Never had a problem with the sockets or wrenches, but I never had an sk ratchet, so I can't say about them.
Have used SK for many years now. The only problem I have ran into is with the older fine tooth 3/8 drive rachets stripping out very quickly. They might have dropped these fine tooth ones due to problems, I cant be sure though.
I have a 1/2" drive socket set that my father gave to my grandfather in the early 60's (and it was used then). It has been used and abused and never given any problems.
About 30% of my tools are SK the others are snap on mac craftman and misc. brands.I think the SK,s are better than craftmen but not as good as snap on. in quailty. All have a great replacement program. Some of my SK,s are 60 years old and never needed replacement. As the one guy said the 3/8 fine tooth rachet is the one I have the most problem with.(but they always replace the guts! All other replacements have been from abuse on my part but with no questions are replaced.
My advise buy the SK,s IF you have a good replacement dealer close.
Not as costly as the snap on,s and work just as well.
As a mechanic I have used all the brands listed and find all of them comparable with the exception of the "old school" craftsmen I never liked the finish, chrome is THE ONLY finish for a hand tool. Having said that Mac and SnapOn prices are insane but they come to you and they don't give you to much scolding before warranting a tool. Newer Craftsman are good and the no questions asked warranty is excellant but they're possibly more brittle and you have to drive to Sears and hope they have what you broke in stock. My only problem with the SK was finding somebody selling their stuff (Allied Tool truck used to come around till he went out of business). Basicly the way I choose is I way up the pros and cons for each tool I buy, asking myself questions like; how often will I use it? how likely am I to break it (a hammer is a hammer no matter what the brand)? and of course how much does it cost? I even have some "Made In Japan" stuff because I couldn't justify spending more than I have to. In my opinion tools are a means to an end not a show piece to be brought out to impress your friends when they come by for beers in the garage.

IMO SK's or as good probaly better than craftsman, but not as expensive as snap-on or mac! I have some of all three brands and like the SK's as good as any. DW
