Starting Problems

I have been having some problems getting my truck to start over the past couple weeks. It will turn over making clicking sound but won't fire up. Sometimes it take 30 mintues sometime it only takes 2-3 trys to get it running. Once I get it started it runs fine. I did notice that the Tach doesn't move when I'm turning it over. Any ideas?

If your tach is not registering when cranking in the no start situation it is a strong indicator the cam position sensor is going bad. International sells them, if you get the part number from Ford they can cross to the International number and save somewhere around a third to half.

I am pretty green to this stuff. How complicated would it be to replace something like that myself?

Sounds to me like you have dirty battery posts. That will cause clicking sounds while trying to start. Clean the battery connections first and see if that solves the problem.

Good luck

Fixnair makes a good point. The no tach reading is what points me to the cam position sensor but it would be a great idea to try the freebie cleanings and such first.

The cam position sensor is located on the front of the engine, at about the 10:00 position of the harmonic balancer on the front of the crankshaft. It is held in place by one bolt that takes a 10mm wrench. Once the bolt is out, I use a small prybar to ease the sensor out and put the new one in. It is easiest from the ground, or at least I thought so.

International has the sensors for a third to half off the Ford price, same part.

Part numbers:

Engine serial number below 375549
Ford ---------- F6TZ12K073A
International -- 1821720C98

Engine serial number 375549 and above
Ford ---------- F7TZ12K073A
International -- 1825899C93

I will try cleaning the posts and give it a week to see what happens. Thanks for the advice!

International part number for the early trucks is 1821720C99 not ...C98.

Sorry for the error. I can't figure out how to ask a moderator to correct it.

I would suspect the cps first. What kind of temperatures are we talking about. If the problem is worse on cold mornings, you might also have a problem with the glow plug relay. If the contacts are fried, it will still click but not send voltage to the glow plugs. I had that problem last winter. Changed the relay and back to easy starting....

We need more info on this. What are the temperatures we're talking about here? Does it smoke when it starts cold? Does it start OK when its warm? Does it start OK if you use the block herater?

THe 2 times I had the most trouble starting it, the temps were about 50 degrees the first time and about 60 degrees the second time and in both ocassions they were very damp wet days and the truck had been outside. I have still experienced the problem after the truck has been sitting in my heated garage though. The truck does blow a small puff of blue smoke on cold start up. I don't think I have had this problem whenthe engine was somewhat warm. I have only used my block heater once since I bought the truck and that was after I had been out all night on the lake ice fishing and it dropped down to -15. I had to have my brother-in-law tow me back home with his F150.
