Erractic temperature gauge

2000 Explorer 4.0 L .Low mileage. Engine warms up to normal operating temperature and then the temperature gauge drops off to the cold range. With more driving on residential streets and highway the temperature gauge shows increases to normal and then backs off to cold again. Theromstat or something more serious?

Most likely it is the thermostat. Only a few dollars, it is fairly easy to replace. Try it first.

Could also be the temp gauge sending unit. It's another common problem.

maybe you should search for some of my posts. I had this problem last January. Mine was a clogged heater core. Unclogging it fixed the problem. However, I would be suprized to see that problem on a low mileage 2000. Mine was a 1993 with about 16o,000 miles on it.

All good suggestions, but I recommend starting with the thermostat since that's considered to be normal maintenance.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I'll start the elimination process. This unit was in storage for 18 months and never started in that period so it could any one those things. Mileage is only 33,000

Had the same problem, changed the thermostat 4 times and heater core twice, problem never went away. Head gasket went shortly thereafter!
sorry
